EXPLORE, LEARN AND CONTRIBUTE

A volunteer for the Arc of Appalachia and Wilderness East created individual pages for nature preserve observations recorded on iNaturalist and we would love for you to join us there.

BIRDS BY SONG

The Arc of Appalachia’s in-person Birds by Song program is an excellent way to start learning birding by ear in person. The Merlin sound ID app by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is an excellent way to start learning birding by ear on your own. What are the benefits of birding by ear? You can learn who is around you even when you can’t see them! It’s a gateway into an often hidden world and will help you learn the language of many other species. After time has passed and you recognize those calls and songs on your own, you will know that on some particular day, even without seeing them, the red-winged blackbirds are back.
